The Name of Jesus, Part 2

by Nicholas A. Catania

April 2017

Go to the previous issue.

In our last issue we began to look at "The Name of Jesus" In part 2 we will see that when a name was given or changed it had a purpose behind it.

Genesis 32:27-28 27And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Israel means God's prevails.

Genesis 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. {Eve: Heb. Chavah: that is Living}

Genesis 5:28-29 28And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 29And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed. {Noah: Gr. Noe: that is Rest, or Comfort}

Genesis 11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. {Babel: that is, Confusion}

1 Samuel 1:19-20 19And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her. 20Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD. {Samuel: that is, Asked of God}

Knowing that a name had a reason behind it and was not chosen randomly when we get to Matthew 21 we can begin to understand the greatness behind the name chosen for God's son Jesus.

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

This is not the first time mention in scripture that the Christ would save God's people.

Prophecy foretold of the promised seed who would bring Jehovah's salvation to mankind dates back to the fall.

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

God had promised salvation it was the reoccurring message of hope that the prophets of old proclaimed.

BBE Psalm 130:7-8 7O Israel, have hope in the Lord; for with the Lord is mercy and full salvation. 8And he will make Israel free from all his sins.

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

KJV John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

KJV Acts 3:26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

Acts 4:10-12 10Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.12Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Acts 5:30-31 30The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. 31Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

Acts 13:22-23 22And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. 23Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

Acts 13:36-38 36For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. 38Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

Hebrews 7:22-25 22By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. 23And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 25Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

KJV 1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

God named his son Jesus. The name Jesus was given to the one who would save God's people for Jesus means Jehovah is salvation.

The name Jesus was given to the savior of God. His name would announce and exemplify who he was and what he would accomplish for mankind.

And every time the name of Jesus is spoken it settles that God is good to his word and Jehovah has sent his salvation to the world.
