A Forty Year Warning

The number 40 represents a time of trial, a time of testing, or the defining of a new generation. It is also symbolic with the reign of kings and a king's rule. The warning in Hebrews 3:7 foreshadowed the overthrow of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple 40 years after the original outpouring at Pentecost. The warning to the Hebrew Christians was not to respond to persecution by turning their backs on Jesus, and not to harden their hearts as their ancestors did.
